Laparoscopic Procedures:

Laparoscopy is a procedure by which we are able to visualize the organs within the abdomen without having to perform surgery. During this procedure your pet is placed under anesthesia and a small needle is used to fill the abdominal cavity with a neutral gas. We then make 2 small incisions through which we insert a small camera and other instruments. With the camera we can see organs such as the liver, spleen, kidneys, lymph nodes and other internal organs. Biopsies may be taken as necessary. By actually seeing the abdominal organs we are better equipped to biopsy specific areas; obtain larger specimens that maximize the chances of getting a correct diagnosis with a minimal risk of complications. Complications are unusual and bleeding from biopsy sites is readily controlled.

These patients are treated with need-based analgesics & narcotics for any post-operative discomfort. In many cases they may go home the same day, although some may stay overnight.

Dr V M Chariar
is the founder of laparoscopic operations on dogs in India. In 1998, veterinary surgeon Dr V M Chariar performed the first laparoscopic sterilisation on a bitch. Drs V M & J V Chariar veterinary surgeons established and run the Neutering Center for Thane City and have operated over 5000 such females for Laparoscopic Spayings. Since 2004 we started performing laparoscopic sterilisations routinely at our clinic as well for Owned dogs.
Since 1994 both surgeons have operated and sterilised more than 500 bitches thru this laparoscopic procedure. The patients are not only coming from the whole of Bombay, but also from the whole of Western region including Nasik, Pune, Ahmedabad and Baroda.

Because of this we are probably in India and maybe even outside India the only Clinic with so much experience in the field of laparoscopic sterilisation. We work with an experienced surgical team of 2 Specialist surgeons and trained Surgery Assistants and therefore our average operating time is only 10 minutes.

Considering the fast time of the procedure the cost will stay relatively low and the short anaesthetic time will benefit your dog’s recovery time.
Experienced surgeons and surgical team in laparoscopic procedures is paramount. Other surgeries are attempting this laparoscopic technique, but when inexperienced, this procedure can be very dangerous or even fatal. In the mean time we have developed a laparoscopic technique to remove the retained epididymis, the cryptorchid testicle.

V-TEAMS’ is the only clinic in Indiathat has been performing this laparoscopic technique for over 7 years and we hope that looking at this website will give you an insight on this patient friendly method.

Laparo (=abdomen) scopy (= Looking) is an operating technique whereby incisions of about 5 mm for access. It therefore is called minimal invasive surgery.

Advantages

  • Short operating time: The operating time is significantly shorter than with the Conventional "old fashioned" method. On average the procedure takes only 14 minutes!
  • Short anaesthetic: The anaesthetic is very short. This will benefit the hangover time. This is especially beneficial for anaesthetic sensitive breeds.
  • Fast recovery: Because of the short anaesthetic en the small incisions the dog will recover fast and in 95% of all cases the dog will eat and drink the same day after the procedure.
  • Small incisions: There will be 3 small incision sites of about 5 mm and not a big wound of 7 to 10 cm. Small incision sites mean reduced pain, no risk of hernia ting, and low risk of infection.
  • Only skin sutures: Instead of closing 3 layers with stitches (peritoneum, fat layer and skin) only the skin is closed with 1 stitch.
  • No Hood, Elizabethian Collar, Bandages or Dressing: The dog doesn’t have to wear a hood. Even if the dog removes the sutures than is there no harm done. Because of fine entry incisions for Laparoscopy, there in no risk whatsoever of evisceration of contents of the abdomen.
  • Better view: The view will be a lot better thanks to scopy magnification & video technology. In the old surgical procedure surgeons tried to make the incision as small as possible and a hand would just fit in the abdomen and try to locate the ovary with touch. Using our technique the ovary and viscera are always in full view.
  • Less chance of intra-operative post-operative bleeding: Because of the great view the risk of intra-operative bleeding is very low, using Electro-surgery further assures us relatively bloodless surgery. The operation site is checked thoroughly before closing the small incisions.
  • Less chance of infection: Because we only use sterile instruments and don’t have a risk of torn gloves it minimizes the risk considerately.

Disadvantages

  • Experience needed: The laparoscopic technique can be dangerous if it is performed by inexperienced surgeons. We have done over 5500 laparoscopic procedures and have therefore most experience in the whole of India.
  • Relatively more expensive: Because of the use of expensive equipment (a new surgical set cost around Rs 10,00,000) the procedure is more expensive than the "old fashioned" sterilisation, but because of the short procedure time we have managed to reduce the cost and it makes it only a little more expensive than the "old fashioned" method.
Removing stitches yourself: The majority of the dog owners remove the 3 stitches themselves after 7 days. So another visit to the surgery is not needed.
